Alexandro Bernabei makes honest admission regarding Celtic loan departure

Celtic have sanctioned several exits this year as Brendan Rodgers looks to trim the excess off his squad in stages.

In January, the likes of David Turnbull, Mikey Johnston, Hyeokkyu Kwon and Marco Tilio left the building either on loan or permanently, allowing the Irishman to reduce his bloated group at Lennoxtown.

Surprisingly, business regarding outgoings has continued in the months since, with Israeli winger Liel Abada completing a £10 million move to Charlotte FC amid his well-documented off-field issues.

Another individual who departed Parkhead for new pastures earlier this month was Alexandro Bernabei, who joined Brazilian giants Internacional on loan for the remainder of 2024.

Rodgers explained the thought process behind his Celtic exit, stating: “His chances, I could only be open and honest and say it would be limited here. That chance to go to Brazil, the team he’s gone with has an Argentinian coach – hopefully he can play regular football.”

Of course, the Argentinian endured a rather unfortunate mishap that delayed his debut for Internacional after missing his connecting flight from Amsterdam to South America, which garnered media attention.

In truth, Bernabei never really got going at Celtic despite the excitement that surrounded his £3.75 million arrival from Lanus in 2022. Overall, the 23-year-old made 28 appearances in green and white, registering one goal and three assists.

Sometimes, transfers don’t work the way many expect, and Bernabei unfortunately falls into this category; however, Celtic fans will wish him all the best in his latest career venture.

Recently, the former Argentina Under-23 international has opened up on his hopes after switching to Internacional alongside his desire to complete a move back to South America once he heard of their interest.

He stated [SC Internacional official YouTube]: “I really wanted to come back and feel what South American football is all about again. Wearing this Internacional shirt gives me a lot of emotion and adrenaline; knowing what this club means makes me want to get going and make an impression here.

“When I heard about Internacional wanting me, I wanted to come here. When it comes to my football assets, I am fast, I cross the ball well and show a lot of motivation and aggression. But you will see that where it matters: on the pitch. I am going to give everything to the cause this season.”

Alexandro Bernabei seems unlikely to return to Celtic

Bernabei deserves credit for taking on the challenge of moving back to South America, and hopefully, he can begin to thrive in an alternative environment once he settles in at Internacional.

Given he was let go despite Greg Taylor being the only other natural left-back at Parkhead, reading between the lines, it may be unlikely that he would return to Celtic in the future to be installed as a first-team player.

Nevertheless, it would be nice to see him find some solace in Brazil to deliver on the flashes of potential he showed during his time in Glasgow.
