Alistair Johnston has leapt to the defence of Wilfried Nancy after his disastrous start.

The Celtic manager lost his first game in charge of the Hoops as they fell to a 2-1 defeat against Hearts.

So far, the criticism of Nancy has been blown out of the water but it is obvious that some things need to improve.

His decision to use his 3-4-3 formation was a particular sticking point for supporters but Johnston, who has previously worked with the Frenchman, has backed him to be a success.

Johnston has promised that Nancy will bring success to Celtic Park, but he needs to put wins on the board sooner rather than later.

He told TSN: “I am excited to have him here. The biggest thing for him is that it is different in the MLS – you don’t get nearly as much time over here. At big clubs like Celtic, he knows very well that yes, you want to implement your ideas, but you need to win as well.

“Hopefully, we will be able to do a lot of winning and also play some beautiful football because that’s what Wilfried’s system is all about.

“I have a great relationship with him and I definitely enjoy his football, especially as playing under him got me a move to Celtic.”
