It was only a matter of time before Rangers were thrown in as a reason Brendan Rodgers left Celtic but Hoops fans would not have expected it to come from Jeff Stelling.

Stelling’s Celtic opinions are generally pretty fact-based and level-headed but as the fallout of Rodgers’ Hoops exit continues, the talkSPORT host really let himself down here.

Ally McCoist and Stelling were discussing reasons for Rodgers’ hasty Celtic exit when the former Sky Sports Soccer Super Saturday presenter offered up Rangers hiring Danny Rohl as a reason the Northern Irishman left the Parkhead club.

It’s a question you would expect from fans from the team across the city as McCoist offered up what he ‘genuinely’ thought of Stelling’s weird speculation.

Jeff Stelling suggests that Rangers changing manager is a reason Rodgers left Celtic

The first topic of conversation this morning on talkSPORT was, of course, Rodgers leaving Celtic when Stelling offered up this theory.

Stelling said on talkSPORT, “Do you think, by the way, that the fact that Danny Rohl has come in at Rangers, he got one win, did that heap extra pressure on Brendan?”

McCoist replied, “No, Jeff, there’s something eating away [at Rodgers], definitely.

“I genuinely don’t think it’s anything to do with Rangers changing the manager. I genuinely, 100%, my opinion is, it’s nothing to do with that.

“And I tell you as much, I don’t think it’s anything to do with Celtic being behind Hearts at the league. I really don’t.

“I think it’s to do with Brendan being really unhappy with something at the club. I think recruitment is clearly one of the things, but I would suggest there’s two or three things that he’s very, very unhappy with. Recruitment been one of them. “

McCoist says Brendan Rodgers would ‘have been delighted to stay at Celtic’ because of Rangers

McCoist had his own theory about Brendan Rodgers and his Celtic situation and he believes that the beleaguered ex-Hoops boss would have wanted to stay at the club because of Rangers.

McCoist continued, “I do not think Rangers changing manager, because I think the opposite Jeff. I think the way things are at Rangers, Brendan would have been delighted to stay at Celtic, because effectively, the last 30 years would tell you, if you’re the Celtic manager and you’re beating Rangers and going to win the league and vice versa, it might not be the case this year, but I don’t think Rangers situation…

“Really, honestly, I’m going to say I don’t think has anything to do with it. What I think slightly might have something to do with it is the fact that Rangers are so poor, I think Brendan probably feels that Celtic haven’t really strengthened from a position of strength.”

Until Brendan Rodgers actually comes out and tells his side of the story, Celtic fans will not know the true story behind him leaving the club.

But one thing is for sure, Rangers would not have even entered Rodgers’ mind when he decided to walk away from Parkhead.
