Ally McCoist was on commentary duty when Daizen Maeda was in action for Japan against the Netherlands at the World Cup on Sunday.
If there is one Japanese player McCoist is very familiar with, it’s Celtic’s double-winning hero, who ripped it apart during the latter months of the recent campaign.
Clive Tyldesley was leading the commentary for Japan’s 2-2 draw against the Dutch on ITV, and during the game, he brought up Maeda’s brilliance for Celtic, including scoring in every post-split fixture match.
To nobody’s surprise, McCoist sounded very bitter when responding to his co-commentator about Maeda’s goalscoring exploits.
Tyldesley: “Finished the domestic season in Scotland with a fair old lick as well, didn’t he? Scoring in his last seven games. Am I going to mention it or are you?”
McCoist: “I am led to believe that was a fact, yeah.”
Celtic fans, will you be tuning into the 2026 World Cup?
🚨 A lot of off-field noise around it 🚨

Ally McCoist reminded of Daizen Maeda tearing Scottish football and Rangers apart
Maeda played just over an hour against the Dutch, getting a mixed response for his performance, but he couldn’t have headed to the United States in better form.
Yes, for most parts of the season, Maeda was off it, but he turned every team inside out during the final months, including Rangers.
While the all-action forward netted that decisive goal during Celtic’s thrilling win over Hearts, his greatest moment came against Rangers.
Maeda’s overhead kick will go down as one of the greatest Glasgow derby goals of all time, and Clive Tyldesley made sure to bring it up.
But once again, McCoist couldn’t come round to hear about it, as their exchange details.
McCoist: “There is one thing Dumfries will have to do today, and that is run. That fella (Maeda) on the ball will run all day. Tremendous energy.”
Tyldesley: “Finished the domestic season in Scotland with a fair old lick as well, didn’t he? Scoring in his last seven games. Am I going to mention it or are you?”
McCoist: “I am led to believe that was a fact, yeah.”
Tyldesley: “One of them against… Yeah?”
McCoist: “Yeah.”
