Alistair Johnston isn’t the only one with Celtic connections in the Canadian World Cup team.
The Celtic right-back is going great guns at this summer’s World Cup, and he has helped guide his nation to the knockout rounds for the first time in their history on Wednesday.
But Johnston isn’t the only one with Celtic connections, because Jesse Marsch’s assistant, Ewan Sharp, is a boyhood Hoops supporter.
During Johnston’s start in Canada’s 2-1 defeat to Switzerland, the topic was brought up by lead commentator Jon Champion and co-commentator Ally McCoist.

Ally McCoist praises Alistair Johnston despite Canada’s final group game defeat
Even though Canada have qualified for the knockout rounds, this is a costly and damaging defeat because it means they can no longer play on home soil.
Because they finished second in their group, any knockout matches Canada participates in will now be played entirely in the United States or Mexico.
But during their match against Switzerland, cameras panned to the dugout where Marsch was in discussion with his assistant.
That’s when Jon Champion brought up Ewan Sharp’s background, including how he hails from Stirling and is a supporter of Scotland’s most successful club.
Champion cheekily tried to rub that information in McCoist’s face, but the former Rangers striker quickly pointed out that he had been praising Johnston throughout the match.
Jon Champion: “Jesse Marsch is there with his Scottish assistant, Ewan Sharp. From Stirling.”
McCoist: “A great part of the world too.”
Champion: “It’s actually a cue for you to give us a bit of detail into his background – I wonder if it’s the fact that he is a Celtic fan that is preventing you.”
McCoist laughs and added: “Would I, Jon? Come on?! I am already telling you that Alistair Johnston is having a fine match, and he is too.”
