Andy Halliday shares what he’s heard from Lennoxtown insider about Celtic’s Paulo Bernardo

Paulo Bernardo is Celtic’s best player in training, according to intel received by Andy Halliday.

The Portuguese midfielder, bar a spell last season between August and January, has never really been a nailed on starter for the Hoops.

Bernardo has only played 185 minutes of football for Celtic this season, with Brendan Rodgers fancying a midfield trio of Callum McGregor, Reo Hatate and Benjamin Nygren instead.

The 23-year-old did impress on a start versus Livingston in August, but his last appearance was poor in the 2-0 defeat to Braga in the Europa League.

Bernardo labelled Celtic’s best player in training

Despite his recent troubles and lack of impact in the team, it appears Bernardo is still giving his all at Lennoxtown in training.

Motherwell midfielder Halliday revealed on a recent Open Goal livestream that someone inside Lennoxtown told him that Bernardo was the best trainer.

Halliday: “Here’s one for you, and I’ll not name a name. I asked somebody who Celtic’s best player is in training and they said Paulo Bernardo.

Ferry: “Did they? Something’s not right there.”

Halliday’s info clashes with Stiliyan Petrov’s Bernardo analysis

Bernardo is clearly doing everything he can to earn more minutes at Celtic, suggesting his attitude is spot on and he isn’t sulking about his current situation.

However, the information revealed by Halliday doesn’t exactly correlate with Stiliyan Petrov’s assessment of Bernardo against Braga recently.

The Bulgarian did not hold back when analysing Braga’s opening goal for TNT Sports, saying: “It’s the first opportunity that Braga has, and this really frustrates me.

“As a midfielder, you should be aware of what’s happening around you. But this is what I don’t understand about Bernardo.

“Look at the pace that he’s trying to close down at. You’ve been given the opportunity to start the game. To have the opportunity to show what you can do. And he’s just jogging. You have to break your legs!”
