Callum McGregor has been an incredible leader for Celtc during these past few years and a key reason behind the team’s trophy-winning success.

Celtic have been fortunate to have great leaders at the club, including Scott Brown before McGregor took that armband.

The Scotland midfielder would have learnt a lot from being in that environment when Brown was showcasing his stuff.

And, fast forward to the present, you are hoping more Celtic leaders are being born and growing under the stewardship of McGregor.

Not that the man with the armband is going anywhere any time soon, but Andy Walker did name another individual as ‘captain material’ inside the dressing room right now.

Cameron Carter-Vickers has been an integral figure at the back for the Bhoys and the best defender in Scotland for several years.

When Brendan Rodgers, and previously Ange Postecoglou, are without his services, it’s pretty evident and that was proven when Celtic conceded two goals to Falkirk in the League Cup at the weekend.

Rodgers provided an injury update on Carter-Vickers, with the American international currently nursing a foot injury.

Celtic have a huge game against Borussia Dortmund coming up and they can’t afford to be without the 26-year-old for that Champions League showdown in Germany.

That’s why Walker was keen to point out the importance of Stephen Welsh and Auston Trusty earning some much-needed minutes against Falkirk at the weekend.

Walker dubbed Carter-Vickers as a ‘great leader’ and ‘captain material’ as the last thing Rodgers needs is for him to be sidelined, as he told Go Radio.

“The games are coming thick and fast,” said Walker. “It was important and another reason that the likes of Welsh and Trusty got game time.

“If you hear Brendan Rodgers talking about the potential seriousness of an injury to Carter-Vickers, you have to be ready to maybe take his place. That’s why Welsh and Trusty were given the minutes (against Falkirk). That’s the last thing you want.

“He is a great leader. He is sort of captain material, Carter-Vickers. The last thing you want is for him to be out of the team in these big games coming up.”

Callum McGregor is one of Celtic’s greatest-ever captains

One of the best things about the leaders Celtic have had in recent times is that they also lead with their performances out on the pitch.

McGregor wants the ball in difficult situations and he wants to dictate the game during those huge games against Rangers.

The 31-year-old has retired from Scotland duty, so you will presume it will further enhance his career and ability to win more trophies with Celtic.

When the dust has settled, he will go down as one of Celtic’s greatest-ever captains and he also has the chance to realistically guide the team to the knockout stages of the Champions League.
