Ange Postecoglou asked Celtic step-up question as history repeats itself

Former Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou has been speaking at his first Tottenham Hotspur press conference.

The Australian, who won five trophies in his two years at Celtic, departed for London just over a month ago.

Celtic have since appointed Brendan Rodgers and the Hoops support are looking forward to what may be to come this season.

Postecoglou, meanwhile, will focus on his job at Spurs as they aim to win a first trophy since 2008. In his first meeting with the media on Monday, he was asked a question about the Spurs job being a step-up from Scottish football.

“I got the same question when I went to Celtic but I’ve managed at a World Cup,” Postecoglou said, as reported by PLZ Soccer.

“Every challenge is different, I don’t view anything as a step up. I’ve had people say that if you’re at Celtic you can only finish first or second, but second is last. I wouldn’t be in a job if we finished second.

“With what people perceive as a step up, you are working with bigger players and a bigger organisation. I’ve never seen it as a step up, only a new challenge for me.

“It’s not just about winning, it’s the manner in which you win. I’ve been explicit about that.”

These quotes may seem pretty familiar to you, and with good reason. As Postecoglou says, he was asked the same question at his first Celtic press conference two years ago.

“I’m not sure what you mean by ‘jump’ but I’m assuming you are saying I worked at a lower level,” he said back in 2021. (Belfast Telegraph)

“I guess that’s a matter of opinion. I have coached at a World Cup, I have coached against some of the best teams in the world.”

So history has repeated itself. And Postecoglou is of course right to say that the Spurs and Celtic jobs are simply different, neither is a step up from the other.

He will face a greater level of consistent competition south of the border, going up against some of the best managers and players around.

However, he will likely never feel the same amount of pressure or adulation that he did in his few years in Glasgow.
