Ange Postecoglou dismisses Tom Rogic Celtic contract question after Motherwell show

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou wasn’t interested in entertaining questions about Tom Rogic’s contract situation at the club after the Australian’s stunning performance against Motherwell.

Rogic last signed a contract in 2018 during the Brendan Rodgers era. He put pen to paper on a five-year deal that keeps him at the club until at least the summer of 2023. It’s unclear whether there’s the option of a further 12 months.

With less than 18 months until that date, the media are clearly sensing there’s a potential new deal in the offing, but Postecoglou deftly sidestepped the issue after today’s match.

As quoted by The Scottish Sun, the Bhoys boss said: “No, it’s the last thing on my mind, mate. We want people here who are happy to be here and want to be a part of it. Unless someone knocks on my door and says they want to go I’ll just let it roll.”

However, the Australian did go on to heavily praise his compatriot, continuing to the paper: “Tom’s been great all year. With Tom, it’s not just his quality, he’s working so hard for us in a defensive sense and pressing the opposition, instigating our defensive work. The quality he’s got shines through after that.”

Obviously, in this form, Rogic is well worthy of a new contract. However, I’d imagine everyone is pretty relaxed about the situation.

The attacking midfielder had the opportunity to leave Celtic in 2020 after the Bhoys accepted a bid from the Middle East and Rogic chose to stay, so he clearly values life in Glasgow.

Clearly, we don’t want to let the situation drag on too long, but it means little in the context of this season, which is what everyone at Celtic is focused on right now.
