Ange Postecoglou explains Harry Kewell appointment and Celtic staff re-structure
Ange Postecoglou has explained his coaching staff restructure ahead of the new season as Australian football legend Harry Kewell joins the club.
Stephen McManus, who has been working with the first team, will now be working directly with Celtic B in an effort to help bridge the gap between both outfits.
Postecoglou said on the official club website: “I am really pleased that Harry has agreed to join my staff. He knows the game inside out at the highest level and wants to play football the way myself and my team see it. I know he is hugely excited about joining Celtic, he is well aware of the scale of the club, what our ambitions are and I know he will make a really positive difference to my team.
“I was keen to restructure our coaching set up, a critical part of this was having a close link between the first team and B Team coaching structures – and Stephen’s role will also be hugely important for us as we look to get that conveyer belt of talent going between the B Team, directly up to the first team.
“The B Team will again compete in the Lowland League, something which will be a crucial development opportunity for our young players as they aim to progress and advance further. I wanted a really strong connection to the development of our B Team and Stephen, with his knowledge of our current first-team philosophy and demands will be ideal in this role.”
Kewell, one of the greatest Australian talents of all time, joins after management spells at Notts County, Oldham Athletic and Barnet.
It hasn’t quite worked out for him in any of those jobs, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have coaching ability. Postecoglou clearly trusts he can make an impact at the Scottish champions.
Overall this looks like a positive move and suggests the manager is getting exactly what he wants out of the Lennoxtown set-up.
If it also helps Celtic bring more youngsters into the fold from the Lowland League B team.
Nothing has yet been announced regarding the overall staff at Celtic B, but there could be a shake-up there too with Darren O’Dea and Tommy McIntyre already involved.
Are we about to see a McManus/O’Dea partnership unfold? That feels like the natural step to take.
Everything is beginning to move along nicely under Postecoglou. He is in total control here.
