Ange Postecoglou shares what outsiders “don’t understand” about his football at Celtic

Ange Postecoglou was asked this week whether the final stage of the season is all about results for Celtic or whether he is still looking for a certain style of performance.

The Australian reiterated that what people don’t get is that he deploys his brand of attacking, open football because he feels this is most likely to produce the results he needs.

Postecoglou was a guest on the latest episode of Open Goal, part of his media responsibilities as manager of the month in the Scottish Premiership.

Ange Postecoglou is “doubling down” on his football at Celtic

It was an entertaining watch with Simon Ferry and Paul Slane as usual, with the conversation turning to the title run-in and the pressure of producing big performances with the stakes involved.

Postecoglou said: “It’s always about results. That’s the bit that people don’t understand. I play this way because it brings me results.

“I don’t get it when people say ‘Well we need a result this week so we’re going to play safe or go long.’ If you think that’s going to get you a result do it every bloody week.

“How long that’s going to last? It’s a trap people keep falling into. I keep saying to them. People think I play this kind of football because I want to prove a point but it’s because it’s been hugely successful for me. It’s the only way I know how to do it.

“At this point now where everything gets decided, we’re doubling down on our football, mate. This is who we’re going to be.”

We know by now Postecoglou won’t be changing his vision at the Bhoys. It was suggested at the start of the season he should be more pragmatic in certain circumstances but that doesn’t even enter his thinking.

Expect more playing out of the back, short passes in transition from defence to attack and plenty of attacking full-back play over the coming weeks, even in the pressure of the title race.

I’m all for it. Bring it on.
