Ange Postecoglou’s interactions behind the scenes at Celtic revealed by Charlie Mulgrew

Celtic have brought Martin O’Neill back to the club, once again, on an interim basis.

Wilfried Nancy was sacked on Monday after just 33 days in the job. He lost six out of his eight matches in a nightmare period in charge.

Celtic confirmed in their statement that head of football operations Paul Tisdale had also been relieved of his duties, as well as Kwame Ampadu, Jules Gueguen and Maxime Chalier.

With O’Neill here until the end of the season, there is now time for Celtic to pause before sorting out a permanent solution – if he delivers the title, that solution could well be O’Neill.

Regardless, there are already names floating around, including a certain Ange Postecoglou.

Charlie Mulgrew and Scott Brown on Ange Postecoglou at Celtic

Postecoglou may have only spent two years in Glasgow, but his impact over that period was quite something.

He’s since won the Europa League with Tottenham before being sacked, and embarked on a Nancy-esque short spell at Nottingham Forest.

Speaking on the Breakdown show, Charlie Mulgrew and Scott Brown lifted the lid on their interactions with Postecoglou in the past.

Mulgrew said: “To be fair to Ange, I met the guy in the hotel, before we played him for Dundee United.

“I was obviously looking to go and visit clubs, and I got his number and messaged him. In ten minutes, he got back and said ‘come down whenever you want’.

“I’d only spoken to the guy once in my life! He was brand new, put me onto his PR, I had arranged to go down there, and all that.”

Brown said: “I didn’t play at Celtic with him, I left just before he came in.

“I met him a couple of times when I was at Aberdeen, and played against him. He’d take time to come up to me, and he would go ‘go and say that goodbye to the fans’.

“I was like, ‘not in an Aberdeen strip, mate’. I can’t just go walking around and waving and that!

“Small details like that was much-appreciated.”

What do you think is the main reason Wilfried Nancy couldn’t buy a win as Celtic manager? 🤔

Ange Postecoglou’s two years at Celtic

When Postecoglou took over from Neil Lennon, Celtic had just finished 25 points behind Rangers in a disastrous season behind closed doors.

He lost all of his first three away league matches and dropped down to the Europa League, but signings such as Kyogo Furuhashi, Jota and Josip Juranovic eventually led a new-look team to a League Cup win.

In the end, Celtic won the league against a Rangers team which had made the Europa League final. The season after, the best was yet to come.

Despite failing to get a win in the Champions League, the Celts steamrolled the league, and Postecoglou bowed out in his last game by delivering a treble.
