Senior Celtic players ‘highly sceptical’ of Wilfried Nancy from the start

Wilfried Nancy’s Celtic exit felt inevitable by Monday afternoon.

Nancy had suffered a sixth defeat in eight in Saturday’s Glasgow Derby against Rangers, worsening a situation that many already wanted to end.

His sacking came after just 33 days in charge of Celtic – that’s a shorter amount of time than Martin O’Neill had in his interim spell.

It’s no surprise to see O’Neill back on an interim basis again, with the club naming him as manager until the end of the season on Monday evening.

Perhaps the people most delighted by this news will be the Celtic players…

What do you think is the main reason Wilfried Nancy couldn’t buy a win as Celtic manager? 🤔

Celtic players and Wilfried Nancy

Of course, the players are never exempt from criticism, and their performances this season have not been good enough – this was an issue before Nancy’s arrival.

But the square pegs so frequently put in round holes made it almost impossible to avoid the downturn in results that we witnessed.

Luke McCowan gave a damning interview after the Rangers game, in which he seemed to have no belief in Nancy’s ideas whatsoever.

Many have also noted how Callum McGregor didn’t once undergo media duties during Nancy’s spell – he has also been linked with a reunification with Brendan Rodgers in Saudi Arabia.

And further reporting is backing up the claims that the players couldn’t strike up a relationship with their new manager.

According to the Guardian, senior Celtic players were ‘highly sceptical’ of Nancy from the very beginning of his time at the club.

There’s no smoke without fire, and other signs such as Stevie Woods’ rumoured departure and Arne Engels’ on-pitch communication issues pointed towards serious injuries.

But nothing reflected worse on Nancy than his final record as Celtic manager: eight games, six defeats, 33 days in charge.

Dermot Desmond on Wilfried Nancy’s Celtic exit

Speaking on the Celtic website, Dermot Desmond has broken his silence on Nancy’s exit, saying: “I am pleased to welcome Martin back to Celtic.

“We know exactly what he will bring and we hope that he can do what he has done for us before, giving us that drive and direction as we move into the next part of the season.

“We all know about his proven track record with the club and hope he can bring us similar success going forward.

“When we appointed Wilfried to the role of manager, clearly we thought we could enjoy a successful period under his control.

“Unfortunately this did not work out in the way we would have liked, and while he and the club are disappointed with the recent period, I want to take this opportunity to wish him well in all he does going forward.”
