Anthony Ralston had a touching message of thanks to his family and friends after signing a new deal at Celtic.

Ralston’s contract extension was announced on Tuesday, with the new deal tying him down at the club until 2027. By that stage, he could be due a testimonial after completing more than ten years on our books. Earning a new contract will be a very proud moment for the defender.

While supporters understandably focus on the footballing impact of such news, sometimes it’s important to acknowledge the human side too.

Ralston allowed us to peer a little into the support network that has allowed him to fulfill his dream of playing for Celtic.

“My family support is unbelievable,” he said in a Celtic TV interview. “My mum, my granda [who] recently passed away. He was my father figure growing up in my life. Without him, I wouldn’t be where I am. He’s now one of the reasons why I strive forward.

“I’ve got a good friends group too who keep me grounded, not that I need it. I’ve just got such good people around me and I always have.

“I owe all of them back so signing this is a proud moment for all of them. Especially my granda, my wee girl, my mum. I dedicate this one to them because they deserve it all, even more so than me.”

Ralston has spoken about the impact of the birth of his daughter previously (Scottish Sun). It’s clear that was a major moment in his life, as it would be with any parent.

It’s also refreshing to hear him talking so openly about tough events like the death of a beloved family member. Again that is something that all of us can relate to.

Ralston can be an underappreciated member of the Celtic squad from time to time. Not inside Lennoxtown, but outwith. He perhaps has his limits as a player but his commitment and desire to fight for the jersey is never in question.

He will have a part to play this season and beyond.
