“Spoke to Brendan”; the obvious Celtic loan candidate after Duncan Ferguson talks take place

Duncan Ferguson has already had some talks with Brendan Rodgers about Celtic loan players.

The retired forward was confirmed as the new manager of Inverness Caledonian Thistle on Tuesday. The Highlanders are languishing at the bottom of the Championship with one point from six matches and Ferguson is wasting no time in trying to improve their fortunes.

Clubs in the Championship, League 1 and League 2 can sign loan players in the months of September and February (SPFL Rules). That seems to be something Ferguson is well aware of.

“We can get them out the Scottish Prem can’t we?,” he told STV. “We can get some boys that are out of contract.

“I’ve already been on to one or two of the Scottish managers. Spoke to Brendan this morning, so he’s going to help me out, hopefully.

“We’ll see if we can identify some players and we’ll take it from there.”

So, based on those comments, it seems like a Celtic star going out on loan to Inverness is pretty likely. There is an obvious candidate too.

It was interesting to see young Daniel Kelly included in the official 2023/24 Celtic team photograph that was released on Tuesday. (Celtic)

He and Rocco Vata were the only B team players to be included, and Vata is probably more likely to be considered as a first-team option these days. Kelly’s inclusion may not mean a great deal, but it certainly suggests that he’s viewed as a first-team player at the club.

When seeing that image and hearing Ferguson’s comments, it’s easy to come to the conclusion that a loan move to Inverness would be beneficial for the 17-year-old midfielder.

He’d get out and play proper first-team football in a more demanding environment than the Lowland League. We’d find out a bit more about him ahead of a potential future at Celtic.

It’s one to watch for sure.
