Arne Engels missed his first Celtic penalty against Young Boys on Wednesday night.
The Belgian boasted a 100 percent record from the spot for the Hoops – retake at Ross County aside – and was confident stepping up to the plate after Greg Taylor had been fouled.
There was a stuttered run up from the Belgian with Joe Hart claiming one thing about Engels’ penalty he says he had never seen him do before.
Man of the match for YB, goalkeeper Marvin Keller, kept it out and play went on but it was a moment which added to Kyogo‘s three disallowed goals and looked, perhaps, like it would not be Celtic‘s night.
Adam Idah would eventually help seal the win by forcing an own goal to ensure Celts qualified for the Champions League knockout playoffs.

Mjallby says Engels’ Celtic penalty was ‘poor’
That is if they can’t make the top eight in what would be an incredible turn of events.
That would take Celts a monumental effort with a lot of luck, but Brendan Rodgers was not focusing too much on that after so much preparation for Young Boys.
Some of that prep might have involved penalty practice but it did not quite work out for Engels.
And on TNT Sports’ coverage of the game, both Parkhead legends Neil Lennon and Johan Mjallby were critical of the spot-kick and the run-up.
Engels’ Celtic penalty record before Young Boys
Lennon on the pen said: “It was a little bit soft, I thought the one on Maeda was a clearer one. But I’ve seen them given.”
Mjallby added: “Arne Engels steps up, you think it’s gonna be a goal because he’s been really, really good when it comes to penalties. But this is poor.
“This is poor. He’s obviously trying to wait a second, a half-second to see if the goalie’s going to dive to the corner, but it’s a poor penalty for me.”

Lenny added how Engels might have mis-hit.
“He normally strikes the ball a lot better,” he added.
“I don’t think he made clear contact and it’s an easy save in the end for Keller.”
