In football, you should never get too high when you are winning or too low when you are losing.
That proved to be the case for Celtic, who were well beaten by FC Midtjylland in the Europa League on Thursday, only days after beating Rangers in the League Cup semi-final at Hampden.
Auston Trusty was Man of the Match against the Gers, but he couldn’t do much to stop Martin O’Neill’s side from leaking three goals in eight minutes against the Danish side.
But despite it being a sobering night for Celtic and Trusty, the American would have had a spring in his step because of the good news coming out of his home country.

Auston Trusty earns recall to Mauricio Pochettino’s USMNT squad
The final international break of 2025 is here, and Trusty won’t be putting his feet up like he has been doing for the last few.
That’s because the USMNT (United States men’s national soccer team) manager Mauricio Pochettino has recalled Trusty to his squad – the US will play Paraguay and Uruguay in friendly matches during the November break.
The United States are co-hosting the 2026 World Cup next summer, alongside Mexico and Canada, and Trusty has just got back into the fold at the right time.
Has Trusty featured under Pochettino before?
The answer is yes, but in a pretty brief manner and in a way that suggested he had little chance of making the 2026 World Cup squad.
The now-injured Cameron Carter-Vickers was getting selected, but even he was warming the bench most of the time, and now his World Cup dreams are over, given the extent of his injury.
But that has opened the door for Trusty. He will certainly continue to get minutes for Celtic because he and Liam Scales are the only senior centre-backs fit and available.
If Trusty performs, then there is no reason why he shouldn’t be fighting to change his fortunes around under Pochettino.
- Trusty’s games under Pochettino: 2
- Starts: 0
- Off the bench: 2
- Unused sub: 2
- Total minutes: 10
- Last time called up: November 2024
