The most ironic thing Ian Bankier told Celtic fans today

Ian Bankier has this morning released a second statement to go along with the Celtic interim report results this morning.

Paul from Celtic Fans TV last week received a response from the club promising an update on the “new year review” soon. That was (sort of), given today as Bankier sent out a separate statement hours after the interim report discussing the matter.

As you might expect, it was a statement with a lot of words that said very little. Bankier confirmed that the club is still in the review period. However, the review has now run so long that our season is now irretrievable.

But there was one extremely ironic comment made by the chairman that I just can’t ignore. It was his way of trying to portray the club as the sensible head in all of the drama. Speaking in his statement, he incredibly said the following:

“We are in the period of review we indicated in our announcement of 7th December. I must state clearly that all decisions we take will be taken calmly and rationally. We will not make hasty decisions that we might regret.

“There is considerable uncertainty as to how and when the game will get back to normal. Equally, there are opportunities ahead of us, as the structure of European competitions evolves over the next three to five years.

“Amongst other things, we will be considering how to take full advantage of what comes our way.”

Bankier comments make no sense; Celtic have already made a decision we’ve come to regret

Where do you even start with this? The idea Bankier is trying to get across is that no decision has been made on the managerial position. And that this is the best course of action as we don’t want to restructure things too hastily.

However, Celtic HAVE made a decision that we’ve come to regret already. By keeping Lennon in his job, we’ve thrown away the 10 in extraordinary fashion. And even when supporters were demanding change at a period when the campaign could still have been saved, we were all ignored.

Celtic can’t pretend they’ve made no decision. They’ve made the choice to ignore key fan concerns throughout the year which has led to a surreal level of apathy towards them.

Bankier then goes on to state that there is “considerable uncertainty” about how the game will go back to normal. How on earth does this relate to changing the manager? How can we honestly use that as an excuse not to try and save what we’ve worked for a decade to achieve?

Talk of taking full advantage of whatever comes our way is cheap. When you’ve clung on to a manager who’s regressed the club at an alarming rate, there is no positives to take.

Bankier’s comments won’t be the end of this. The fact we’re still in this apparent review period suggests there should be a further update down the line. But by that point, as it already is, it will be too late.

In other news, Celtic have reportedly made a big step forward in their hunt for a Director of Football.
