BBC man Steven Thompson admits Celtic ‘will win the title’

Thompson was speaking after Rangers’ draw with St Mirren when he was forced to admit Celtic will become the Scottish champions for the fifth season in a row.

Thompson told BBC Radio Sportsound, “I’ve just got it up in front of me now. Hi, hi. Well, maybe that shows you how competitive it’s going to be this season.

“I think there’s only one thing you can predict correctly, and that is that Celtic will win the title at this minute. Out with that. It’s hard to know what is going to happen.

“But yeah, I think the battle for the top six is obviously going to be interesting. Right now, who would you say is going to be in trouble? It’s difficult to tell.

“So, it’s going to be an interesting season.”

Could Celtic surpass huge 2011/12 title-winning margin to Rangers

Celtic have had so many title wins it’s hard to keep track of what season was the most memorable.

So let’s keep it simple. Can Celtic, this season, surpass the points margin Neil Lennon achieved when McCoist was the manager of the Ibrox club in 2012?

Celtic won the league by 20 points after Rangers went into administration and were deducted 15 points. Lennon masterminded a stunning comeback that season.

In October, Celtic were in third place 10 points behind McCoist’s Rangers after a 3-3 draw with Kilmarnock.

Fast forward to December and Lennon overturned that deficit before Rangers’ point deduction after winning 10 out his 11 fixtures on the trot, including the 1-0 New Year derby win to take the Hoops two points clear at the top of the league.

Celtic eventually won the title by 20 points so is it so inconceivable that if Rodgers’ side wins at Ibrox on Sunday, the same points margin could be met or even bettered? Celtic fans can, but hope.
