Benjamin Nygren has caused a bit of a stir as the midfielder sparked talk that he could exit Celtic this summer.

As Sweden head home from the World Cup, Nygren was asked by Gotesborg-Posten if he will stay at Celtic beyond the summer.

And what the Celtic midfielder said fuels speculation about leaving Glasgow but is he pushing for an imminent Parkhead exit?

Benjamin Nygren refuses to rule out Celtic exit

Nygren was on fire for Celtic last season scoring 21 goals in a league and cup double-winning campaign. That form fuelled transfer speculation and the Swede has refused to pour cold water on it.

Responding, the Celtic midfielder said, “We’ll see. I have my dreams and goals that I fight for every day, and that is to play at the highest possible level. But when that happens, I can’t answer right now.”

Whether Nygren is referring to this summer or a move further down the line is impossible to know, but he clearly wants to play at the highest level possible.

However, Chris Sutton has delivered his prediction on whether or not the Hoops star will stay at Celtic beyond this summer.

Chris Sutton believes Celtic will keep Nygren

Sutton praised Nygren’s first season at Celtic calling his 21 goal haul ‘terrific’ but he does point out that he is not quite the finished article.

Sutton wrote in the Daily Record, “Nygren has his failings, he’s not perfect, but 21 goals from a midfielder in the first season at any new club was a terrific return. It has attracted some interest, but my gut feeling is he’ll stay, especially if Arne Engels and Reo Hatate depart the midfield scene, which at this stage seems highly plausible.”

Nygren’s comments have opened the door to more speculation over his future, but Sutton believes Celtic will ultimately hold the cards on any potential move.

If the club does lose Reo Hatate or Arne Engels this summer, keeping Nygren could quickly become one of the most important decisions they make.
