Bosun Lawal became one of Celtic’s summer window casualties after he swapped Glasgow for Stoke City on a permanent deal.
The Irishman earned the Bhoys a fee of between £2 million to £3 million as his move to the Britannia Stadium was confirmed.
Despite being heralded as a talented midfielder also capable of playing in defence, he made only one senior appearance for Celtic against Morton in the Scottish Cup.
Several pre-season showings weren’t enough to convince Brendan Rodgers that he was worth a place in the senior squad, so he has now moved onto a new challenge and will be eyeing first-team stardom.
Speaking about his time at Celtic, Lawal revealed he has been carrying an injury for some time without knowing and also made an admission on his spell north of the border.
Bosun Lawal speaks out after Stoke City move
Speaking to Stoke Sentinel, Lawal indicated he has been carrying a stress fracture in his lower back that has been present from his time on loan at Fleetwood Town. He also admitted he would’ve liked to play more at Celtic.
Lawal stated: “I’ve had it for a while without realising and I played with it all through last season. I’m happy that it has been identified now and it can be sorted and I can get to my best for the long-term, rather than it getting worse.

“It’s frustrating of course. Every footballer wants to play but I’m happy that it can be taken care of and I can be my normal self, playing again. It’s not affecting my day-to-day life but it’s just something we need to get on top of so I can be at 100 per cent and give 100 per cent for the club.”
Later, he said on his time at Celtic: “Everyone wants somewhere where they can play regularly and just enjoy their football. That’s what I’m looking for and I feel like Stoke is the right club for that.
“I enjoyed my time at Celtic. It’s obviously a massive club. I didn’t play as much as I would have liked but I still learned a lot and I’m grateful for the opportunity to have been part of that team that won the amount of trophies that they won with some amazing players.”
Celtic made good progress on outgoing during the summer
Most Celtic supporters will be more concerned about how new signings fare at the club. However, their arrivals wouldn’t have been possible without the club sanctioning outgoings.
The Bhoys managed to shift Mikey Johnston, Hyeongyu Oh, Tomoki Iwata and Sead Haksabanovic for decent fees, hastening the process of bringing in replacements to prop up the squad.
Ultimately, Lawal never got a real chance to show his capabilities at Celtic. That happens in football and it made sense for both parties to go their separate ways.
However, he will be wished well by the support. Needing an environment to showcase his talent weekly, Stoke may be a good fit for the Irishman.
