Gustaf Lagerbielke might not be front and centre of Brendan Rodgers’ plans, but there is a reason why he was kept on at Celtic in January.
There was talk of the summer signing leaving last month, but another injury setback to Cameron Carter-Vickers meant that he stayed on board.
Well, a possible injury to Stephen Welsh during Celtic’s win over Hibernian on Wednesday night, is another reason why Gustaf Lagerbielke stayed.
Brendan Rodgers confirmed after the match that the 24-year-old ‘felt tight in his hamstring’ and that’s why he was brought off, as he told Sky Sports.
Fans will get to know the real extent of his issues because the medical team will see to it today (Thursday).
In truth, Stephen Welsh wasn’t exactly pulling up trees when he was hooked off just after the hour mark and on a yellow card.
But it seems as though Brendan Rodgers, for the umpteenth time, will have to rotate his backline again, not forgetting the head injury suffered by Alistair Johnston.
Stephen Welsh injury update
“He felt tight in his hamstring,” said Rodgers. “So, we will have to see that with the medical team tomorrow (Thursday).”

Brendan Rodgers should show more faith in Maik Nawrocki
It was a surprise to see the Polish defender on the bench for the Easter Road trip, even though he started the draw at Aberdeen.
Celtic paid big money for him and he should be handed a run of starts to really showcase what he is all about.
If he is in and out all the time, then there will be no rhythm to his game, he will be prone to making mistakes and you simply won’t see the best of him.
So, whilst this potential injury to Welsh is disappointing for the player, this hopefully opens the door for Nawrocki to get a proper run of games.
