Michael Stewart hits the nail on the head for Celtic amid ‘ludicrous’ Gustaf Lagerbielke transfer situation

The dropped points at Aberdeen for Celtic just added to a week to forget for the whole club after an abject January transfer window.

It’s not just the winter transfer window where Celtic fans were raising questions, the same was being said in the summer and how it didn’t really lift the mood.

One name that was signed back then was centre-back Gustaf Lagerbielke, but in next to no time, Celtic are already looking to offload the player.

Michael Stewart hit the nail on the head by stating that it just signals ‘red flags’ and ‘alarm bells’ for the supporters, whilst labelling the whole transfer situation as ‘ludicrous’, as he told The Scottish Football Podcast.

Bearing that in mind, it probably shouldn’t be a surprise that Celtic failed to sign a much-needed left-back last month, whilst leaving it to the last minute to sign a struggling striker from Norwich City.

This isn’t a slight on Adam Idah, the fans will get behind him, no doubt, in fact, he looked pretty good on his debut on Saturday against Aberdeen.

But the whole transfer picture of the club isn’t right and Michael Stewart highlighted how Celtic’s £3 million summer capture sums it all up.

Gustaf Lagerbielke at Celtic

“When you look at the likes of Lagerbielke, who they are trying to offload a window later,” said Stewart.

“Well, that in itself tells you that it isn’t a successful transfer. That is just ludicrous. To bring somebody in the summer and try to offload them in January.

“That, as you can understand from a fans’ perspective, has red flags and alarm bells all over it and he isn’t alone.”

Who signed Gustaf Lagerbielke?

This question has to be asked to Brendan Rodgers. Was he pushing to sign the player from Swedish side, IF Elfsborg?

Was this recommended by the board? Scouts? Who agreed to put that fee down, sign him and then months later look to ship him off?

Given the constant injury issues to Cameron Carter-Vickers this season, it meant that Lagerbielke actually couldn’t get the move that he wanted.

In the end, despite interest from Italy, he stayed put at Celtic and you have to imagine he will be, at best, warming the bench from now until the end of the season.

And even then, he might struggle to make Rodgers’ squad.
