Brendan Rodgers has the press room in stitches with class answer about Jeffrey Schlupp’s Celtic future

Jeffrey Schlupp has been an astute signing by Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers.

For well over four years now, Celtic have looked for a left back to compete with Greg Taylor and after Neil Lennon and Ange Postecolgou tried and failed, Rodgers seems to have come up trumps.

Jeffrey Schlupp was signed by the Celtic boss as temporary cover in the winter transfer window but has come in and made that Hoops starting spot his own

With Taylor’s contract running down and Schlupp’s loan spell coming to an end, Rodgers was asked after Celtic beat Hearts if the Ghanaian would like to extend his stay in Paradise.

And the Parkhead manager’s reply had the press room in stitches.

Laughing, Rodgers told Celtic TV [3m 50s], “I bet he would. 32, coming here, coming to Glasgow.

“I think it’s something between now and the end of the season we will look at but I don’t want to commit too early.

“But honestly, he’s a great boy. I knew what I was getting. I know his type. He’s a good guy, but more than a good guy, he can perform and play. I think there’s more to come.”

Schlupp has now started all but one of Celtic’s fixtures since he joined the club in the winter window and it seems that Greg Taylor will have a difficult job retaining his starting place this season.

Rodgers admits Celtic will need Kieran Tierney backup

Whilst Rodgers is clearly a fan of Schlupp, the Hoops gaffer knows that whatever happens with the 32-year-old or Greg Taylor, he knows that Celtic needs cover for the incoming Kieran Tierney.

Rodgers continued, “We obviously know we have Kieran coming in the summer, who’s high, high level, but we know that we’re going to have to have someone else if Greg moves on.

“My idea was always to keep Greg, and it still is, but we have to see how the last few months develop.”

With less than three months now on Schlupp’s contract, Celtic know they could bet the energetic left-back at the end of the season on a free transfer.

Whether or not a deal could be done is anyone’s guess, but with Schlupp now ready to add a Scottish Premiership title to his name and possibly the Scottish Cup, silverware and the promise of Champions League football next season could well persuade the experienced defender to extend his stay in Glasgow.
