The Greg Taylor contract story has now been rumbling on for months at Celtic.

The Scotland defender is free to speak to other clubs as Taylor’s Celtic contract now runs into its final months.

Taylor has been Celtic’s first-choice left-back ever since he joined the club to replace Kieran Tierney back in 2019 and has seen off many suitors for his position.

However, with no contract signed and Tierney returning to Celtic in the summer, Brendan Rodgers has shared the real reason the 27-year-old has not put pen to paper on a new deal.

Brendan Rodgers shares what Greg Taylor wants at Celtic

Rodgers told Celtic TV, “I’ve been in the position so many times, and I can read situations as well. So it’s probably more that he’ll move on than stay.

“Which is a big shame for me because he’s someone I really like. I love him as a person but I love his game because I think his game is suited to how we work.

“It’s not financial, it’s not anything, but I respect his position because he’ll want to feel that he’s playing every single week.

“Whoever is in next year with Kieran will still play a lot of games but my feeling is that he may well move on, but I know between now and the season he’ll give his all.”

Greg Taylor’s impressive Celtic career and huge reason why fans will miss him

No matter what people think about Greg Taylor’s time at Celtic what cannot be denied is that he has been a huge success at the club.

Taking over the mantle from Kieran Tierney, Taylor was in the unfortunate position that he would always be compared to the popular Arsenal defender.

Now that his time at Celtic looks like it’s coming to an end, Taylor’s contribution to the Parkhead club’s success cannot be denied.

One huge reason Taylor will also be missed is that during his time at Celtic, he was rarely injured. In 208 appearances and five years at the club, the fullback was injured on just two occasions.

Taylor suffered two hamstring injuries which meant he missed a grand total of just seven games over his time at Parkhead.

In this day and age, when there is so much football to be played, having a player in the squad who remains virtually injury-free is something of a rarity these days and Rodgers will have a tough time finding one like Taylor.
