Ange Postecoglou is “pretty confident” that Callum McGregor will return to action for Celtic on Thursday night after missing out on matches against Real Betis and Livingston.

The captain has been a big miss, with the Bhoys slipping to two consecutive defeats in his absence.

Getting him back in the team would be a big bonus. Thankfully then, Postecoglou is bullish on an imminent return.

In fact, the midfielder was close to featuring today.

Speaking prior to today’s Scottish Premiership match, the Bhoys boss told Radio Scotland [14:17]: “He’s always been the kind of player that really gives everything day in, day out – a model pro on and off the pitch. He has all the trademarks of being a great leader but he’s only beginning that journey now.

“He’s working hard, he was close today but we’ve got to be careful, it’s a long season with a lot of games ahead. We’re pretty confident he’ll be ready for Thursday night and it’ll be great to get him back.”

Postecoglou has also previously said that Giorgos Giakoumakis is in line for an appearance against Raith Rovers this week, so it seems the next team will have a different look to it than the one we saw today.

Celtic also have players such as James Forrest and Kyogo Furuhashi due to return over the next few weeks, which will be another boost to the manager’s options.

Squad depth appears to be a real issue at the club this season despite busy work during the summer.

If today is anything to go by, we really need to get a bit of luck when it comes to keeping our strongest eleven on the pitch.
