Callum McGregor explains the worst thing Celtic can do in build-up to final

Ahead of tomorrow’s Premier Sports Cup Final, Celtic captain Callum McGregor has revealed the worst thing he and his teammates could do:

Overthink it.

McGregor has become emblematic of the style under Ange Postecoglou. Taking a deeper role as a number 6, the Celtic captain has found himself as the beating heart of the Bhoys team. Just as likely to receive a pass from a goal kick as he is to set up a goal, McGregor is absolutely everywhere.

As captain, he’s the one dictating the mindset in the dressing room and on the pitch. So when he says there’s one thing his teammates need to avoid, they’ll be listening.

And they’d do well to; McGregor has won 4 Scottish Cups and 5 League Cups.

With tomorrow’s final fast approaching, McGregor said [Scotsman]: “In terms of preparation and doing the right things going into the game, it’ll feel pretty similar.

“The worst thing you can do is overthink it and start doing things differently. It’s a process and if you trust the process and it works you stick with that.

“There’s obviously the tag of being captain but I’m not even thinking about that. I just want to perform and help the team to take the trophy and that’s my sole focus.”

If you’re going to listen to anyone in the Celtic dressing room, it’s surely Callum McGregor. Of course it is. Even if he weren’t the captain, he’d be an enormous influence. Having come through the Celtic Academy, and enjoyed enormous success with the club, he’s the go-to guy.

And of course, he’s right. Adding any more instructions, changing the style of play, or anything like that would be detrimental to the goal tomorrow.

Celtic have already beaten Hibs this season. We’re on sensational form, even with an injury crisis. There is nothing to suggest any big changes are needed. Ange Postecoglou will be acutely aware of that.

“Trust the process” was a phrase popularised Stateside by the Philadelphia 76ers [Bleacher Report], but it’s catching on over here. Postecoglou has a methodology and attitude to win matches. Follow his instructions and the job will get done.

McGregor knows that. And likely, with McGregor’s influence, every single Celtic player will be repeating that mantra.
