Callum McGregor has proved why he is still one of the best in Scotland and that he can be the heart of the Celtic midfield for a good while yet.

McGregor captained the Hoops to another Scottish Premiership and Scottish League Cup domestic double.

Now one of Celtic’s most decorated players of all time, the 31-year-old is seen as a senior professional that can guide the younger members of the side.

Lennon Miller could be one of those and the Motherwell youngster is firmly on Celtic’s radar this summer.

Miller has been wanted by Celtic for some time but they face competition from clubs in Italy and around Europe for his signature.

If he joins, the 18-year-old could be the heir to McGregor’s throne as the stats prove that the current Celtic captain is still a cut above his midfield rivals.

Callum McGregor tops the Scottish Premiership charts in five key stats

This season has statistically been one of the best for McGregor.

His return of 10 goals was his best since the 2019/20 campaign, where he scored 13 times.

As well as goals, McGregor is known for doing the dirty work and has topped the chart in three areas.

No player in the SPFL made more recoveries than the Celtic star in the 2024/25 campaign. He made 35, which was 11 more than Miller, who finished second.

Additionally, he was also number one for touches (3,128), successful passes (2,592), successful passes into the final third (741) and the best pass accuracy of 94 per cent.

Callum McGregor hopes to start next season on a high after penalty miss

Although this season has displayed how good McGregor is, one moment stands out and not for good reasons.

His penalty miss in the Scottish Cup final contributed to Aberdeen going on to lift the trophy.

McGregor admitted it was his “worst” moment of his career, but looked ahead to putting his wrongs right next year.

“I’ve bounced back from difficult positions before,” he told the BBC. “It will take me a while to get over it.

“Once the new season starts, it’s up to me to show everyone I’ve got a bit of steel.”
