Callum McGregor reacts to what could happen when he and James Forrest retire from Celtic duty

There aren’t more popular players at Celtic right now than Callum McGregor and James Forrest.

The duo have come through the ranks at Celtic Park, and they have spent their entire professional careers playing for Scotland’s most successful club.

McGregor had that loan spell, as a teenager, when he played for Notts County, alongside England and Manchester City star Jack Grealish.

But the 31-year-old has put everything into making Celtic what they are today, as well as Forrest being a one-club man.

Once again, the duo are on for the Treble with Celtic, and if it happens, then they will write their name into the history books, in more ways than one.

After Callum McGregor and James Forrest retire from Celtic

As of this moment, McGregor is sitting on 23 trophies in Celtic colours, whilst Forrest has an incredible 25 to his name – level with Bobby Lennox.

But, by the end of it all, at least one, if not both, could be Celtic’s most decorated player of all-time, and the man on the flanks could and should do it this season.

McGregor was asked on Celtic TV about becoming the club’s most decorated player after he retires, and nobody ever catching him, or Forrest.

“I have spoken to James about his medal tally,” said the Celtic TV presenter. “Yourself as well, you aren’t that far behind.

“There is every chance that, when you and James retire from the game, one of you will be the most decorated Celt of all time, and it’s likely to stay like that for the rest of your life. Does that kind of thing motivate you?”

McGregor responded: “Not in the short term. When you talk to James, he will probably tell you the same. We have been here for so long that everything can change in one game.

“We have been here many, many times. All you are trying to do is train well. Play well. Train well. Play well. And then, the numbers start to rack up. The trophies start to rack up on top of that. It’s so, so difficult, and you just need to stay in the present and try to help the team as much as you can.

“Like you said, we are very close to those types of figures. Again, I don’t think it has entered our minds. It’s more about the collective. If we can win trophies, then of course, we can be successful individually as well.

“The most important thing is the team wins and the club are successful.”

McGregor and Forrest’s stats and trophies for Celtic

Line them up and they would fill Glasgow, it’s so much silverware and they aren’t even stopping yet.

Everybody knows that it’s a matter of time before the Premiership title is won, but see past St Johnstone, and then Aberdeen or Hearts, then it’s a Treble and more trophies.

Including this season’s Premiership crown, this is how many trophies McGregor and Forrest are sitting on.
