Why did Callum McGregor wear a mask?
McGregor had to wear a protective face mask between January and July 2022 after suffering a fractured cheekbone in a Scottish Cup tie against Alloa Athletic.
Some Celtic fans nicknamed him ‘CalMask’ as a result of wearing the facial protection.
Kris Boyd comments on Callum McGregor
McGregor played with the protective mask for the first time against Rangers in the Glasgow derby on February 2, 2022.
Not too long after the 3-0 win for Celtic, former Rangers striker Kris Boyd wrote these comments in The Scottish Sun: “Look at Celtic. Callum McGregor played with a fractured cheekbone.
“The fact he managed to get through the 90 minutes without anyone testing out that face mask is another story, but his commitment to the team was tremendous.”
Celtic were unhappy with the comments and Boyd’s employer Sky Sports issued a reminder that he should always take into account ‘the language and context used in articulating and telling a story.’
McGregor commented on the situation and said: “When you first see the comments, it doesn’t make great reading.
“It doesn’t look good in that sense but it has been rectified since then and we have had a chat as well. So it’s put to bed now, it’s absolutely fine, we just move on.
“I think he recognises it was a poor choice of words in the beginning and for me that’s it.”
