Celtic captain Callum McGregor has opened up on the positive aspects for Ange Postecoglou’s squad of going unbeaten in pre-season.

With the luxury of no Champions League qualifiers this summer, McGregor and his Celtic teammates were handed the unique opportunity to undergo a fully uninterrupted pre-season.

The Bhoys have spent the last four weeks preparing for the 2022/23 campaign, and it is clear to see they have been getting down to work on the training ground.

Not only did they have the opportunity to work on the training ground, though. The Hoops also faced a series of friendly fixtures to ramp up their preparations for the new season getting underway this weekend.

Taking place in Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland and Scotland, Postecoglou’s squad were involved in a series of competitive fixtures, which gave them the ideal test before the real competitive stuff starts again.

After six friendly games, Celtic came away undefeated, winning three and drawing three.

Speaking in a recent interview, Celtic captain Callum McGregor opened up on what going undefeated can do for the squad at this early stage of the summer, as he expressed how important it is to lay the foundations for the campaign ahead.

He said [Celtic FC]: “You know pre-season, it’s a lot about fitness and getting your work in. But, at the same time, you’re trying to build that winning mentality or don’t lose mentality.

“So, it’s important that we’ve come through pre-season undefeated, and obviously we try and take that into the season in terms of mentality wise, how we work together as a group and face challenges head on because there will be a lot of challenges.

“So, it’s important that everybody stays strong and stays together, along with the supporters, and that will be the foundation for a positive season hopefully.”

It may only seem like pointless pre-season games to help build the squad’s fitness. However, that is definitely not the mentality that Postecoglou and his captain hold regarding the games Celtic were involved in this summer.

The vast majority of the fixtures provided the Hoops with a brilliant challenge that will have gone a long way to help our preparations as we look to defend our title this coming season.

Hopefully, we are able to see McGregor and the rest of the Celtic squad reaping the rewards of a competitive pre-season when the campaign gets officially underway this coming weekend.
