Callum McGregor has seen it all during his time at Celtic, but even he would have been taken aback by the chaos that has unfolded this season.

Thankfully, Celtic can still win the domestic double to dampen the madness that has ensued over the past 12 months, but it still doesn’t cover the glaring cracks that have grown, grown and continue to grow.

Everyone is aware of how important McGregor is to Celtic. Still, he seems to be challenging the board to showcase their ambition when discussing his long-term future at his boyhood club.

“I always said I want to be at this club,” said McGregor. “This is the club I want to play for. I have come through since I was 8 years old. It’s in my DNA. It’s something I carry with me every single day.

“So, yeah, for me, I want to be here. I just want to make sure that the club continue to push, want to be successful, and want to drive.”

Callum McGregor sends a brilliant message to the Celtic board about his future

Yes, McGregor hasn’t been at his best this season, but he is still a very important member of this declining Celtic squad.

Plus, the Hoops captain understands what it’s like representing Scotland’s most successful club, just like his long-time pal, James Forrest.

Ahead of the post-split fixtures hitting everybody’s screens, Forrest has signed a new Celtic deal, so McGregor was naturally asked about his future, and this is what he told Celtic TV.

“I always said I want to be at this club,” said McGregor. “This is the club I want to play for. I have come through since I was 8 years old. It’s in my DNA. It’s something I carry with me every single day.

“So, yeah, for me, I want to be here. I just want to make sure that the club continue to push, want to be successful, and want to drive.

“Having conversations with those upstairs. That’s something they want to do. So, for me, this is the place I want to play.”

McGregor wants to finish his career at Celtic

Make no bones about it, McGregor wants to end his career at Celtic, but he needs to know just how far the powers that be want to push this boat.

What’s interesting is that the 32-year-old has mentioned how the Premiership is ‘getting more and more competitive’, and ‘people are spending more money.’

McGregor also wanted to highlight Celtic’s flashes of progress in Europe, but reaffirmed that while he wants to ‘keep pushing’, he needs to know if it’s a two-way street.

All season long, Celtic fans have protested against the board, and now the most important man wearing the shirt on the pitch is outlining how they need to start becoming more ambitious.

On if he wants to end his career at Celtic: “Yeah, like I said there, it’s obviously two-fold, where if the club think I have something to offer, and obviously the club, as I said there, they want to keep pushing, they want to keep being successful,” added McGregor.

“The only thing you get when you are at this club is that when you get a taste of success, you want to keep it. You want it every single year. You want to keep pushing. Trying to play at the highest level you can.

“Then, trying to get the club to the highest level, there is definite progress in that front (Europe). That is something we want to be. We know the league is getting more and more competitive. People are spending more money.

“So, we have to match that and try to push on as well. I am sure everyone upstairs knows that as well. But if you want to be a successful team, you have to keep pushing.”
