Cameron Carter-Vickers has made it clear he wants to find a ‘permanent’ home next season, stating that it’s time to move on from Tottenham Hotspur.
Carter-Vickers has been at Spurs since he was 12 years old, so deciding it’s time to say goodbye to the English Premier League side is no small decision. In fact, it’s potentially career-defining, for better or worse.
He understands he’s at a crossroads in his development, but now he is publicly willing to admit that it’s time to find a new footballing home.
Speaking to The Scottish Sun today, the defender said: “I have really enjoyed it at Celtic. We were good to watch and an enjoyable team to play in. I am 24 now and want to be somewhere where I can settle for a few years.
“Me and my agent have been talking to the club throughout the season about what’s going to happen at the end of the season. But obviously, it’s not just my decision. Celtic have to come to some kind of agreement with Tottenham so it’s not completely in my hands. I just want to be somewhere playing football. If I’m being completely honest, I think it’s time to move on permanently. I’m happy with last season. I really enjoyed my time there.
“But what will happen in the future? I’m not too sure. Will I go back? You never know. I just want to be somewhere where I enjoy my football and get on with the manager. The manager at Celtic is a top manager who wants to play out of the back and keep possession, which suits me.”
Celtic are in pole position for Carter-Vickers
Carter-Vickers has options, and he knows that. He’d be silly to publicly put all his eggs in the Celtic basket in his first media appearance after the season. That’s where the ‘you never know’ aspect of his comments come from. Nothing is confirmed until it’s confirmed in football.
It’s hard to see anything but Celtic being in pole position for his signature though. Look at what he values – a club he can build at, a place he can play regularly, a manager he trusts – Celtic tick all the boxes here.
It seems that if Celtic get their negotiations with Spurs right – which goes beyond fee and could include deal structure and add-ons – then Carter-Vickers will be playing in green and white next season.
For me, the only real danger of Carter-Vickers not joining Celtic was if Spurs made it clear to him he might get a renewed opportunity in London. That doesn’t appear to be the case.
Surely it won’t be long until we get a confirmation he’s ours?
