Celtic defender Carl Starfelt has left the Sweden squad to undergo assessments on a hamstring injury suffered away to Slovenia last night, Aftonbladet have reported.

Starfelt went down just before halftime clutching his leg and required assistance to leave the pitch.

He confirmed earlier that he is set to receive scans of the issue, although his immediate prognosis on how he feels didn’t sound encouraging.

Ange Postecoglou knows all too well how long it can take for a player to return from a hamstring issue. Kyogo Furuhashi and David Turnbull both missed months of last season.

However, Starfelt also had a hamstring issue last autumn and managed to recover in a matter of weeks, so there’s no reason to think he’s a guaranteed absentee heading into the new campaign.

The manager will be desperate to have the Swedish international involved in pre-season in order to prepare for the league kick-off at the end of July.

The Celtic is due back in its entirety to Lennoxtown in staggered dates between late June and early July before the squad jet off to Austria for a training camp and some friendlies.

Starfelt managed to forge a convincing and productive partnership with Cameron Carter-Vickers last season and will be hoping to continue that into his second campaign, should the Tottenham Hotspur man finalise his move to the Bhoys.

Fingers crossed that the defender’s scans over the next few days bring good news!
