Celtic plan to announce a new manager ‘very shortly’, the club confirmed in a statement to supporters this afternoon.

The club said on the official website: “Following very positive and detailed discussions with Eddie Howe, with the belief that he would be an excellent candidate for the position of Celtic Manager, we allowed time for the process, given he’d previously made it clear he was not looking to return to management until this summer at the earliest.

“We can now confirm that Eddie will not be joining the Club, for reasons outwith both his and Celtic’s control.

“We wish Eddie success for the future.

“As part of the ongoing process we have engaged with a number of candidates. We fully appreciate our fans will be seeking clarity on this matter and we aim, very shortly, to announce the appointment of a Manager with the quality and desire to take Celtic forward and bring further success to our supporters.”

Time is of the essence.

Celtic supporters have waited months since the resignation of Neil Lennon. Eddie Howe was long reported to be our number one choice, as the club have now confirmed. They’ve failed to deliver.

With season tickets already on sale and less than two months until our first competitive match of the new season, ideally a manager will be in the door by this time next week.

Celtic will probably be desperate that a name doesn’t leak between now and their announcement. Already burned by the Howe saga, it does no-one any favours if more hyped up reports emerge over the next few days.

The new boss also faces a difficult situation. Everyone now knows he’ll have been the second-choice.

What does that do for the perception of his reign as Celtic manager?
