Celtic already enjoying big benefit of new Brendan Rodgers approach

If it’s one thing Celtic players have made clear since Brendan Rodgers returned as manager, it’s that they’re enjoying a new, more open feel to life at the Bhoys.

Matt O’Riley and James Forrest have both alluded to it, while captain Callum McGregor has also noted the difference between Rodgers and the last boss. That’s not to say they were unhappy before, it’s just different and, apparently, a refreshing change.

But Rodgers’ more personal man-management style could have an even more tangible benefit – and that is already being demonstrated in the situation of Liel Abada.

Yesterday, the manager indicated that the Israeli winger wants to stay and improve at the Bhoys – having been the subject of pretty consistent reporting about wanting an exit from Celtic over the last eight months. Some had him destined for a transfer away this summer.

One of the more intriguing things said by Rodgers was that Abada “likes to communicate” and that they have had multiple chats about his situation and his future. That sounds like the kind of thing that just wasn’t happening under Ange Postecoglou.

Forrest also lauded Rodgers’ personal style in quotes emerging this morning, stating that he makes players feel really good and ready to compete.

If Rodgers’ presence and different approach to the previous regime is already convincing assets like Abada that their future lies in Glasgow, then Celtic are already winning in these early stages of the new era.

Having invested a lot of playing time into the winger’s potential over the last two seasons, we can now hopefully see him hit his stride and a new peak under a different manager.

Different players respond to different techniques and Abada might be the kind of character who needs an arm around the shoulder rather than distance from the man making all the decisions. Sometimes it’s important to understand what’s going on in a talent’s head.

Postecoglou was clearly successful at Celtic and his own style produced its own set of results. But a change-up at this stage, for this squad, might just be perfect timing. For Abada, that certainly seems to be the case.
