Celtic have had an eye on the Champions League qualifier first leg tie between Kairat Almaty and Slovan Bratislava.

One of Almaty or Bratislava will face Celtic in the Champions League play-off round, the final stage before the main league phase.

UEFA have confirmed that Celtic will be at home in the first leg but Brendan Rodgers will be wary of the fact that the Hoops play Rangers four days after the second leg.

There is still another leg to go to determine whether it will be Almaty or Bratislava in the play-off round, but one side already has a slender advantage.

Kairat Almaty secure last-minute winner against Slovan Bratislava

The side from Kazakhstan are the lowest-ranked side in the tournament but when playing at home, the advantage of knowing that every side has to make a mammoth journey to central Asia.

Almaty is closer to China than it is to Europe so anyone making the trip knows just how daunting it is.

They used it to their advantage though and in the last minute of the game, secured a famous 1-0 victory against the Slovakian side after 16-year-old Dastan Satpayev struck home a penalty.

Satpayev is a household name in Kazakhstan already and will join Chelsea on his 18th birthday but in the meantime, has put his side 90 minutes away from coming to Celtic Park.

When is the second leg of Slovan Bratislava vs Kairat Almaty?

Celtic won’t have to wait too long to discover which side they will be playing.

The second leg takes place in Slovakia on 12 August where the hosts will still be the favourites to get the job done.

Slovan goalkeeper Dominik Takac isn’t fazed about playing Celtic but, if they can’t overturn their one-goal deficit, they won’t get the chance to seek revenge at all.
