A delegation from the Austrian side Admira Wacker was in Glasgow during the week to hold discussions with Celtic about a formal link between the two sides.
The Bhoys sent goalkeeper Tobi Oluwayemi and defender Matthew Anderson on loan to the second-tier team in the summer transfer window, which is a tentative beginning to a possibly extensive relationship between the two clubs.
On Wednesday, Admira’s sporting director Peter Stoger and other staff members were in town to watch Celtic’s UEFA Youth League and Champions League matches against Atletico Madrid.
It seems discussions have been positive and Stoger is keen to pursue the connection even further.
He said [The Herald]: “It was about discussing how we can continue to develop cooperation between the clubs. You look for win-win situations where everyone benefits. And Celtic are really very interested in the partnership.
“There’s a good chance we can expand the partnership, but it won’t happen overnight. We also had a meeting with Brendan Rodgers. The Atletico game was fantastic and Celtic Park is definitely one of the best stadiums in Europe with an incredible atmosphere.”
Celtic and Admira Wacker relationship could become very interesting
The visit comes amidst reports that the Scottish FA are considering relaxing their stance on dual ownership of clubs.
Currently, senior figures at and owners of Scottish football sides are not allowed to have a controlling interest in any other team, even abroad.
Theoretically, if they had the intent, Celtic could take a dramatic step towards enveloping Admira Wacker for development purposes providing the SFA board gives written permission.
However, that kind of step would also open up the possibility of big cash-rich teams from abroad entering the Scottish football market and boosting the fortunes of the Bhoys’ opponents.
It will be a tricky balance for not only the SFA to navigate but also for Celtic to pursue. Regardless, it seems that the club are keen on exploring new relationships with clubs on the continent. Watch this space.
