Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou: “Everything I do I assume I will be here for the next 10 years”

For all the talk about 12-month rolling contracts and the nonsense hot takes that Ange Postecoglou wouldn’t last at Celtic, he’s only ever planned for the long-term at the Bhoys.

The Australian has taken Celtic from an outfit that was frankly a mess this time last year to a title-contending team that has room to seriously improve further.

He’s now shared every decision he makes at the club is for the long-term benefit of Celtic. He has the next ten years in mind.

Speaking to The Scotsman, he said: “Everything I do I assume I will be here for the next 10 years. The reality is I probably won’t be. But every decision I make and everything I do is for the long term. That is how I have always approached my career.

“I don’t worry about how long I am going to stay or lengths of contracts, I make decisions that I think will set the club up in the best possible shape for years to come. I have never been one to choose the short-term approach and change my way of doing things.

“But I do know that, at this football club, we had to have success this year. That was clear in my mind.

“Being successful is still our main aim, but it was also about building a side for the medium to long term. That’s how I always work.”

This is the kind of long-term vision we need at Celtic, with or without Ange Postecoglou.

Managers rarely admit to this kind of thing. Ange himself even says it’s unlikely he’ll be here for a decade – that’s how football works. But it’s also a state of mind. It’s about building something, not fighting fires.

That’s what the manager means. If a decision is made with long-term benefits in mind, the chances are it’s not too bad for the short-term either.

Celtic may not win the league this year even if we’re now in pole position. But it’s clear Ange is looking beyond this year and thinking about what kind of club he can have on his hands eventually. We need to back him fully on this journey and see where it takes us.
