Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou reveals City Group wanted to keep "outstanding asset" Mark Lawwell
The Celtic decision to appoint Mark Lawwell as the club’s new head of recruitment and scouting certainly raised a few eyebrows.
Much of that hasn’t been his fault at all, simply a reality of the circumstances. When you appoint the son of a former chief executive to a prominent club role then some are going to make snap judgements.
However, as Ange Postecoglou has pointed out this weekend, Lawwell is well qualified for the position. His arrival could be quite the coup, especially when you consider the City Group wanted to keep him around.
Ange talks up Mark Lawwell move to Celtic
The Celtic boss told The Glasgow Times: “I worked with Mark for three-and-a-half years. Obviously, Yokahama [are] part of the City Group and Mark’s responsibility there was to help us on the recruitment side and transfers, particularly with overseas players.
“When I came across here to Celtic, when we were talking about adding staff he was one person I was really keen on bringing across. But he was already working for a really good organisation in City Group and they were pretty keen to hold on to him, so I knew it wouldn’t be a simple task getting him across.
“So I’m absolutely delighted we’ve managed to bring him to the club and he’s going to be an outstanding asset for this football club because in that space – that area of recruitment, the ability to scout the right kind of players and the analytics behind it – he has been at the cutting edge working for one of the best organisations in the world at identifying players.”
New head of recruitment is well qualified
Lawwell was at the City Group for a decade and you simply don’t retain a position in an organisation like that without being good at your job.
Obviously, City have the financial resources and backing that helps anyone in a recruitment role. We’ll need to wait and see how Lawwell adapts to life at Celtic.
However, it’s very, very silly to write off this move simply because of who is father is. It’s also unfair.
Ultimately, if Postecoglou is happy then so am I. If this is effective over the next few months then no-one should have any problems.
