Legendary Celtic midfielder Scott Brown has officially announced retirement from his playing career to fully focus on becoming a manager.

Earlier this year, when Brown left Aberdeen, he indicated he would take time to consider his options and the next steps in his footballing life.

Now, speaking exclusively to The Daily Record, the 23-trophy former Celtic man has admitted his playing days are over, also paying tribute to Ange Postecoglou and the current Bhoys team.

Scott Brown officially announces retirement

He said: “It’s been a very difficult decision to call time on my playing career. But I’ll be 37 next month and I feel the time is right for me to announce that I’m retiring in order to focus fully on becoming
a manager.

“It’s the end of one chapter but the start of a new one. I’m excited about what the future might hold. Obviously I will cherish some amazing moments from my time and none better than winning so many trophies during my years at Celtic. So I’m delighted that the club is now about to celebrate winning the title back.

“I know how it feels to lift that trophy and how much hard work is required to win it. So I have to take my hat off to Ange Postecoglou for the job he has done in such a short space of time. I hope the manager and the players savour every moment.

“They’ve responded by really kicking on this season. It’s been fantastic just to watch the way they’ve gone about it. The inverted full-backs, the high press, the energy levels – that’s the way I will want my teams to play the game when I’m a manager somewhere down the line.”

Celtic legend likely to take management job soon

Everyone is eager to see where Brown takes his first job as a manager. It feels likely it will come sooner rather than later and could even be this summer.

In the past week, he’s been linked with the Raith Rovers and Fleetwood Town jobs. It seems there are options on both sides of the border.

His reputation and winning record as a player will no doubt be of interest to many clubs, even if the job offers initially don’t come in the Scottish top-flight.

With reports also indicating he also already has a preferred backroom team, the Celtic legend is just about ready to go when it comes to the next chapter.
