Celtic boss states Jota "showed his love" for the supporters yesterday; addresses future
Ange Postecoglou has stated that winger Jota “showed his love” for the Celtic supporters yesterday after another fine performance.
The Portuguese talent, on loan from Benfica until the end of the campaign, has been in sensational form this term. His 2 assists in the 4-1 win over Hearts yesterday made it 26 direct goal contributions this term alone [Transfermarkt].
The Celtic supporters are itching for Jota to sign permanently, with reports stating it would cost £6.3m to get a deal done [The Scotsman].
And after being asked about Jota’s relationship with the supporters after yesterday’s win, Ange stated that it’s clear how much the youngster loves the support.
As quoted by the Daily Record, the Hoops boss said: “It was reciprocal today, I think Jota showed his love for the Celtic fans and this club. He understands. He’s humble enough to know that he’s got the talent but he had the talent last year – you need the platform. This football club has given him that.
“In terms of next year, with him and Cameron [Carter-Vickers] we’re in a similar boat. If everyone wants something to happen it’ll happen. But right now the most important thing is they represent this club to the best of their ability and bring success to Celtic.
“Some players might get an offer they can’t refuse. There’s no guarantee any of us will be here next season – I mean I hope I am, but apart from that! You have to focus on the present and Jota was great again today.”
Jota continues to keep his cards close to his chest
Jota has always given the impression that he’s hugely enjoyed his time at Celtic Park. However, when asked about his future, he’s always been quick to totally dismiss the idea.
Let’s be realistic about why that is. Chances are he’s simply looking to assess his options at the end of the season. Given his form this year, he’ll likely want to have some conversations with his agent and family before he makes a firm commitment.
Ange is spot on in what he said above. He could get an offer out of absolutely nowhere that simply can’t be refused. The same goes for fellow loan star Cameron Carter-Vickers. That’s just the nature of the transfer window. You don’t know what can happen.
For now, it’s all about getting over the line and securing the Premiership. Yes, the celebrations may have already started, but on Wednesday it’ll be official so long as we avoid defeat. You can’t underestimate just how big that will be for the players and the football club.
Afterward, Celtic will have the prospect of trying to tempt players with Champions League qualification under their belt. Whether that’s enough to tempt Jota remains to be seen.
For now, a decision clearly hasn’t been made.
