Brendan Rodgers has been very clear about his Celtic demands.
In fact, they have led to him leaving the club mid-season in the past. Rodgers admitted as much, vowing not do it again.
Much has been made of the disappointment surrounding last summer’s transfer window, which saw the first-team squad become undoubtedly weaker.
Whilst Rodgers has admitted responsibility for the side’s catastrophic Champions League exit against Kairat, he has also spoken of feeling ’empty’ after the closure of the window.
But should more responsibility be placed on the Parkhead boss? One former Celtic vice-captain thinks so.
Celtic can’t just keep churning money out says Charlie Mulgrew
In the Champions League qualifying defeat, Celtic left £11 million man Arne Engels on the bench, along with £9 million signing Adam Idah who departed a week later.
For Charlie Mulgrew, this means that ‘valid questions’ should be asked of Rodgers, who has been backed with big-money signings prior to this summer.

Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show, Mulgrew said: “There’s no doubt about it – going into the Kairat game, there was £26 million on the bench. It doesn’t matter what business you are, you’ve got to ask ‘where’s the talent that we bought last year?'”
“Why are they not playing? That needs to be a question. You can’t just go, ‘that’s done, here’s another £30 million.’ I don’t think you can just keep churning money out.
“I don’t think any business can do that. So that’s a very valid question. Where are these players that we spent a lot of money on?”
Mulgrew’s comments certainly go against the ongoing narrative among the support that Rodgers should be backed more.
Should Brendan Rodgers be trusted with Celtic transfers?
Rodgers’ effectiveness as a recruiter of players is up for debate.
On one hand, Scott Sinclair and Kasper Schmeichel stand as strong examples of successful signings led by the Hoops boss.
But the benched pair mentioned by Mulgrew, along with £6 million Auston Trusty who has also largely not been preferred to Liam Scales this season, do make the question valid.
Perhaps recruitment restructure demanded by Rodgers could involve the appointment of a director of football, or a similar role, with more power and pedigree than present head of football operations Paul Tisdale.
