Celtic CEO Michael Nicholson has appeared to welcome back Martin O’Neill with a message to Wilfried Nancy.
Nicholson is under serious pressure at Celtic after the comments he made when Wilfried Nancy was unveiled as the new permanent boss less than six weeks ago.
The Hoops CEO claimed Nancy was Celtic’s ‘number one candidate’ in a staged interview that was another embarrassing episode in this sorry mess.
What message would you send Wilfried Nancy as Celtic sack the manager?
However, now that O’Neill has returned to Celtic, the under-fire executive has put his head above the parapet as Nicholson welcomed the returning Hoops legend back to the club.
Michael Nicholson’s ‘respect’ for Wilfried Nancy as O’Neill returns to Celtic
Nicholson has been largely silent as carnage breaks around Celtic, which makes his tenure as CEO look untenable right now.
However, the executive did manage to break cover to send Nancy a message as he shares a conversation he had with O’Neill after he agreed his return.
Nicholson told Celtic’s official website, “We are very pleased to welcome Martin back to Celtic as manager until the end of the season and we will give him and the rest of our management team every support as we address the challenges we face during the second half of the season.
“Having spoken to Martin, I know he is excited again to be with us and very committed to doing everything he can, along with Shaun and the other coaches, to deliver the success we all know he can bring.
“Wilfried is someone who we will always respect, and while it is unfortunate that things did not work out, we certainly offer him our best wishes and hope that he can once again achieve success in his future roles.”
Michael Nicholson should follow Wilfried Nancy out the Celtic Park exit door
Nicholson’s tenure at Celtic surely cannot survive the Wilfried Nancy debacle?
As well as not properly unveiling the Frenchman and allowing Nancy to take in his first-ever Celtic press conference on his own, his statement at his hiring is enough to end his spell at the club.
Michael Nicholson voices support for Wilfried Nancy’s Celtic ‘project’
Nicholson claimed Nancy was Celtic’s ‘number one candidate’. Based on what, exactly? Who made him the number one target considering the Frenchman’s miserable win rate at Columbus Crew.
And even when it was crystal clear that Nancy was not working out at Celtic, why was the trigger not pulled after the Motherwell defeat?
Nicholson may well be delighted that O’Neill is back, but this whole Nancy saga has further damaged his reputation with the already beleaguered Celtic support.
