The eye-watering sum Celtic could stump up for hiring and firing Wilfried Nancy

The Wilfried Nancy era at Celtic is over as the board finally pulled the trigger on the Frenchman.

By all accounts, not all that happened at Celtic under Nancy was all his fault, however, there were variables that the former Columbus Crew boss could have controlled, but did not.

Nancy could have abandoned his system until he had the players to play it. He could have controlled his baffling Celtic substitutions. He also could have kept under wraps some of his pre and post-match press conference ramblings.

Unfortunately, Nancy did none of those and ultimately paid the price by losing his job as the Celtic manager.

But he will still be handsomely paid for his failure at Parkhead.

Wilfried Nancy could cost Celtic a painful £5m

Celtic made it abundantly clear that Nancy was their top priority to replace Brendan Rodgers permanently this season.

That has now come back to bite them after Celtic sacked Nancy after less than six weeks in charge and, according to the Daily Record, this debacle has cost the Parkhead club dear.

The report says that on top of the £2.5m Celtic paid Columbus Crew to get Nancy, the club will also have to pay out ‘various severance packages’.

The total figure has been estimated to have cost the Bhoys up to £5m for a five-and-a-half-week failure.

That, in itself, puts the spotlight firmly on Celtic CEO Michael Nicholson.

What Martin O’Neill said about his Celtic return

Celtic, once again, have turned to Martin O’Neill as the legend returns to Parkhead for a second interim spell.

In a statement, the new Celtic boss said, ““I am really pleased, in fact, very honoured to be asked back to manage the team again and I am looking forward to getting back to work again with the players.

“I know we would all have hoped for things to have worked out differently under Wilfried and I personally want to wish him good luck with everything he does in the game. He is a fine man and I am sure he will go on and achieve success again, I have no doubt of that.

“For me, I’ve been asked to take this great job on again and my focus will be to try and get us back to winning ways if we can. We will need everyone right behind us.

“We still have a lot to look forward to and a lot to try and achieve, and myself, Shaun and the coaching staff and, of course, the players will be giving everything to achieve all the success we can for the club.”
