Celtic cult hero, the ‘Derry Pelé’ Paddy McCourt, has a way with words as it turns out.

An incredibly talented dribbler of the ball, one of the real shames of recent Bhoys history is that McCourt couldn’t stay fit enough to thrive at Paradise. Ultimately, his was a nomadic career, which saw him play for Barnsley, Brighton and finally, Finn Harps.

It’s not like it was by any means a bad career, and McCourt was a gifted player. But oh, if it could’ve been different for the winger at Celtic.

Still, as a massive Hoops fan himself, McCourt regularly has his finger on the pulse when it comes to the feelings of supporters. And ahead of Scott Brown’s final game at Celtic Park, he summed up the strange emotions surrounding our meeting with St Johnstone tonight.

In a single tweet, he wrote what so many of in the fan-led media have tried to capture.

Because really, that’s just it, isn’t it? It’s everything summed up.

It doesn’t feel right or fair. Of course, that’s the prevailing feeling around the pandemic in general. So many of us have lost people we love, have missed births, weddings, birthdays, even just a hug from a friend or family member. In football, the pandemic has deprived us of what weekends are made for; heading to Celtic Park to cheer on the Bhoys.

For any game, it hasn’t felt right or fair, being stuck at home while the team has struggled. We can only guess what impact supporters might’ve had on proceedings this term. However, what really sticks out at this particular moment is not being able to cheer Broony off into the next chapter of his career.

Sorry for tugging at the heartstrings, but it’s Paddy’s fault. Paddy McCourt, you wild-haired, defender-embarrassing genius.

There are so many right ways to celebrate a player. Some put on a bald cap and shades. Others make commemorative jackets. In Paddy McCourt’s case, he’s just said exactly what needed to be said.
