It appeared that Celtic are all set for the arrival of Wilfried Nancy

But not quite yet. We all thought that Martin O’Neill’s final game would be at Easter Road, but it now seems that Celtic will need to wait another while yet.

Nancy has reportedly been hard at work on recruitment and analysis ahead of his first ever role in Europe – and he faces a daunting run of fixtures to start with.

He arrives at a club with plenty of off-field distractions. Last week’s chaotic Celtic AGM was the culmination of months of unrest which contributed to Brendan Rodgers’ departure.

Will Nancy be prepared for it? Well, he’s been made aware of it, at least.

Wilfried Nancy has been briefed on Celtic situation

Rodgers’ departure is the ultimate reflection of the difficult situation that Celtic managers find themselves in at the minute.

The manager has to appeal to the fans without upsetting the board, and vice-versa. If Nancy can avoid chatting about Honda Civics, that would be a start.

But coming from a completely different environment in MLS, there are fears that it could be a shock to the system of the incoming boss.

Those at the club are aware of this, and the Daily Record assure that Nancy has been briefed about the difficult situation he is stepping into.

O’Neill has unified the support as a familiar face, but Nancy’s position as an unknown quantity means that his start will largely rest on results.

What isn’t clear is his start date. If he starts in a week of a top-of-the-table clash against Hearts, a Europa League tie against Roma and a Premier Sports Cup final against St Mirren, he’s a braver man than most.

But as we know, things are never straightforward with the Celtic board.

Celtic’s pursuit of Wilfried Nancy

It was reported that Celtic initially reached out to Nancy immediately after Rodgers’ departure, agreeing to wait until his MLS campaign concluded.

If that’s true, the appointment has been in the works for over five weeks without being rubber-stamped.

There have been widespread calls for O’Neill to be given the cup final – and this may well end up being the case.

And if he keeps on winning, we might never see Nancy at all.
