This has been a very testing season for Celtic and Callum McGregor.
It can still end in typical fashion, and that’s McGregor lifting another Premiership title with Celtic, but as of this moment, that crown is heading to Edinburgh and Heart of Midlothian.
As Celtic toil week in and week out, Frank McAvennie has demanded more from the man with the armband and for him to be more vocal towards his underperforming teammates.
“Callum should be screaming at players around about him, because he is the captain,” stated McAvennie.
“But he doesn’t, it’s not in his nature.”
67 Hail Hail put the debate to our TalkingPoints users following McAvennie’s comments, asking how you felt about McGregor as a leader, and these were your responses.

Celtic fans react to Callum McGregor’s leadership style
It’s fair to say that all of you agree that McGregor just isn’t a shouter. Even if things are going well, it’s not in his nature to act in that manner.
One thing is for sure: McGregor has been a successful captain, and he has done very well after taking over from Scott Brown.
But there is proof that you can have two completely different types of characters, but still be very, very successful.
One of our TalkingPoints users even went one step further and questioned McGregor’s qualities on the pitch, and how he needs to stop playing it safe.
While another noted, ‘it’s not his nature’ to be as vocal as McAvennie is asking, but then suggested that somebody else should step up to that role if McGregor can’t.
- celticdave1974: ‘Definitely.’
- jimbo.1955: ‘It is not in his nature to be that type of captain. But needs must, he should be more vocal, if not get another player who has the respect and responsibility to carry it out.’
- callum.boyle65: ‘He’s a very different kind of captain from previous versions. He’ll never be like Scott Brown and vocal in terms of barking instructions. He’s an arm-around-the-shoulder person.’
- chasoneill059: ‘He needs to stop playing sideways and start passing the ball forward. I have seen strikers making forward runs, and he sees them but decides to pass back to Scales sideways to Scales, and Scales gives it back to him to pass it to another midfielder. He has a wonder goal every 1 in a 100 shots; the other 99 go out of the park.’
