Celtic fans split on the best ever Glasgow Derby goal

One reader was in no doubt: this is the greatest ever. They said: “I have seen a lot of world-class goals in paradise. WOW. Easily the greatest of them all.”

Another agreed: “Without a doubt.”

The most common alternative raised was, unsurprisingly, Henrik Larsson’s chip in 2000. One fan said: “I’ll still go Larsson’s chip! But Maeda’s is firmly in the conversation now.”

Another agreed: “Nothing will beat Larsson’s chip. But welcome to the club, Daizen!!!”

One fan brought Shunsuke Nakamura’s iconic curler into the conversation, saying: “Larsson’s chip and Naka’s swerving shot from about 35 yards are still better for me but it was a worldie goal, pure class from the MOTM Daizen.

“He just pinches it from Arne who I thought was outstanding, but the whole team played well apart from McCowan, who proved why he didn’t deserve a contract extension…”

Going further back into the past, a fan recalled Jimmy Johnstone’s goal that won the SPL title for the Lisbon Lions at Ibrox: “Wee Jimmy’s 20 yard screamer at Ibrox when we clinched the League in 67.

“On a pitch which was a 2-foot deep swamp. And with his left foot.”

Finally, one Celt doesn’t even have it in their top-two derby goals this season, saying: “Nope. I don’t even think it’s the best in a Glasgow derby this season. Calmac and Chermitis both better imo.”

Martin O’Neill himself rates it above Larsson’s, though he joked that the King of Kings may not be willing to agree.
