I don’t think the Ryan Christie wayward Celtic shot meme is going away anytime soon. It’s here to stay.
The refrain of “Ah, fur f-” was a familiar one throughout the 2020/21 season as we witnessed long-range Christie shots battering the empty seats of stands up and down the country.
It was a primary frustration for many. Not passing or remaining patient with attacking opportunities before blasting a shot disrupted many periods of Celtic play.
Nobody had more shots from outside of the box in the Scottish Premiership last year than Christie. [WhoScored]
In fairness, it might not have been entirely his fault. The second and third-placed players in that metric were David Turnbull and Callum McGregor. It’s still unknown whether taking pot shots was a direction from the coaching staff, or a sign of frustrated players. Probably a bit of both.

It’s something that Ange Postecoglou will hopefully address heading into the new season. We can be far more efficient with our possession than we have been.
Again, in fairness to Christie, I don’t think he had quite as bad a season last year than many suggest. His output was still pretty good for an attacking midfielder. His seven goals and 15 assists show he did still contribute. [Transfermarkt]
The meme remains though. He’s become a figure of social media fun over the last eight or so months.
And so it was this weekend in response to a NASA-themed joke tweet that was going viral on Twitter.
If we don’t laugh about our failures last season, we’ll continue to cry. So here’s a bit of light-hearted patter about Christie that gave me a chuckle…
In other news, Yokohama F Marinos capitalise on Celtic appointment.
